HOW TO REPAIR A STUCK GARAGE DOOR

Locate the problem

There is a cord on the inside of your garage door that runs through a tube, allowing you to open and close it from the inside. If this cord appears broken, simply tie a knot in it to avoid any further issues with the door being opened or closed. If the door opens an inch or two but then stops rolling up, there is likely something blocking the door from going up all the way. Look for items such as leaves, snow, or ice that may have built upon the track and caused the door to get stuck.

If the garage door is making popping or banging noises when you operate it, there may be an issue with the tracks. Sometimes, misaligned tracks can cause a loud noise and become stuck in one place. Try loosening and retightening the screws of the track to get it moving again. If this does not work, try sliding the track around to find where it is catching. Clear this area with a screwdriver or putty knife, and tighten the screws again before trying the door once more.

Check for debris in tracks and on top of the door.

If you have a garage door opener, be sure to check the photoelectric eyes after cleaning the tracks. These are the small black circles on each side of the door. If they are dirty or covered in spider webs, your opener will not be able to close the door automatically. Simply wipe them down with a cloth and try opening and closing the door again.

If you have tried all of these tips and your garage door is still not opening, it may be time to call a professional. A qualified technician will be able to identify the issue and fix it quickly and efficiently.

Remove any obstruction from tracks.

If your garage door is stuck, the first thing you should do is check to see if there is anything obstructing the tracks. Remove any debris or objects that may be in the way so that the door can move freely.

Apply a lubricant, if needed

Once the tracks are clear, lubricate them with a silicone-based lubricant. This will help the door move more smoothly. You should also lubricate the rollers by spraying them with WD-40.

If your garage door is not opening or closing properly, it may be because the springs are broken. To determine if this is the problem, try manually lifting the door. If it opens and closes easily, the springs are likely fine. However, if it’s difficult to lift or open, the springs need to be replaced.
